Michigan's Great Outdoors
(reproduced from the great people at Michigan.org)

Michiganders love the outdoors, and the many activities that can be enjoyed.   Whether the lush fields of spring, the warm days of summer, the cool & colorful days of autumn, or winter snows — there are plenty of ways to play in Michigan's big backyard.

Golfing
Michigan's golf season doesn't know when to quit. Golfers in southern Lower Michigan are out in late March, and still teeing it up in November. Check out Travel Michigan's Golf section and see just how grand America's Summer Golf Capital is.

Cycling
Michigan is bicycle-friendly not just because of its wealth of bike pathways and trails. It's also a beautiful state to see from a bicycle seat, from the Motor City to the Porkies. Cyclists can pedal that entire route without support vehicles since the Mackinac Bridge Authority began giving special assistance to those needing to cross the Straits. Michigan Bicycle Touring organizes guided bike tours for all ages and abilities all over the state. If off-road pedaling is for you, the Michigan Mountain Biking Association (MMBA) can connect you with local chapters statewide, show you where the trails are, and inform you of mountain bike events. Great Northern Adventures in Marquette also offers tours for the mountain biker. The League of Michigan Bicyclists organizes pedal activities and clubs throughout the state, conducts bike safety programs, and keeps tabs on Michigan cycling laws and regulations.

Canoeing
Rivers abound in Michigan, and so does great canoeing. More than 60 member liveries of the Recreational Canoeing Association (RCA) can put you on the water, from the easy-going Huron River near Detroit to the scenic and exciting Ontonagon River in the western U.P. You can also celebrate this fabulous sport every year in the first week of June — officially declared as Michigan Canoeing Week.

Hiking
We don't know how many miles of hiking and backpacking trails there are in Michigan, but the opportunities are endless. Perhaps the best known trail system lies within Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in the U.P. The Porkies are a treasure of forest, waterfalls, trout streams, wildlife, and unforgettable views of Lake Superior. Not as famous, but just as appealing are the pathways found in Michigan's State Forests. Once it's completed, the North Country Scenic Trail will stretch 3,200 miles from North Dakota to New York. One of its longest and most beautiful segments winds through the U.P. and along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore before crossing the Straits into Lower Michigan and beyond. Hikers looking to hook up with others can contact the Grand Traverse Hiking Club. The GTHC doesn't confine itself to the Traverse City area, but conducts seminars and outdoor activities that address Michigan Wilderness Areas statewide.

Camping
Whether off to spend a month hiking in the woods, or a weekend out in your RV, Michigan has numerous camping opportunities.  Among Michigan's State Parks, National Parks, State Forests, National Forests, and Privately Owned Campgrounds, there are thousands of campsites for everyone. For State Parks campsite information and reservations, call the Michigan Department of Natural Resources toll-free at 1-800-44-PARKS.

Hunting
Hunting is a popular activity throughout the state. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources can give you all the information that you need on  required licenses, state regulations, and safe hunting tips. Whether for deer or wildfowl, Michigan has great game opportunities.

Fishing
It's actually close to 150 different species found in Michigan's inland lakes, waterways, and 40 thousand square miles of Great Lakes waters. Wade, fish from the bank, drift down the river in a boat or canoe, or hire one of more than 500 Charter Boats to try for Great Lakes salmon, lake trout, or walleye. A great place to start might be the Fly Factory in Grayling where you can catch up with the Trout Bums. They'll acquaint you with angling on the fabled AuSable and Manistee Rivers, arrange guided riverboat fishing, and talk tackle. Check in with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for information on licenses, seasons, and where they're biting now.

Boating.
As a gauge of Michigan’s outdoor adventure potential, consider this: Michigan has more than 900,000 registered pleasure boats--more than any other state. Nearly a million sailors, power boaters, and canoeists--along with windsurfers and innertubists can choose from the Great Lakes experience, rivers and streams, and all those inland lakes we mentioned before. Michigan’s 73 recreational harbors allow visitors to travel the Great Lakes by boat. With more than 1,200 public launch sites throughout the state, and about 100 canoe liveries, day boaters can sample Michigan’s fantastic variety. The more adventurous can rent parasailing and waverunning gear at many full-service, seaside resorts.

Horseback Riding
Saddle up and ride all year 'round. Upper Peninsula riders can check in with the Spring Valley Ranch in Ironwood to connect with other horse lovers throughout the U.P. and northern Wisconsin. They serve oatmeal and oats at Century Farm Bed & Breakfast in Suttons Bay (800-252-8480) where, by prior arrangement, horses are as welcome as their riders. The Michigan Horse Page offers info on riding clubs, tack, events, and anything else that makes horse sense in Michigan.

Snowmobiling
Revving it up in a thick blanket of powder is a popular activity when the colors of fall give way to winter. Visit Travel Michigan's Snowmobile page to find out more about the ever-growing snowmobile activities in Michigan.

Skiing and other Snow Sports
Whether its Downhill Skiing, Snowboarding, or even Snowshoeing, Michigan is a premier destination for all of these winter recreational sports. Find out more about what we can offer, by going to Travel Michigan's Winter section.
